I have a debate coming up about how marijuana should NOT be made legal, i need credible sources from like WHO or CDC or other credible places to back up this claim, i need credible statistics and really good points. Think of possible counter arguments people may have and base the sources on that, thanks. Please format in the way where it’s the source, then the point under it, thanks.
Marijuana Should Not be Made Legal
Marijuana is the most abused drug after alcohol in the United States. According to a National Institute report on drug abuse more than 11.8 million young adults used Marijuana in the past years for nonmedical purposes (“Marijuana DrugFacts, 2020”). In most cases, Marijuana is inhaled (as smoke or vapor) or ingested depending on its form. According to WHO 2016, Marijuana has both acute and chronic effects when consumed. The acute effects of Marijuana include impaired cognitive development, where free recall of previously learned things or encounters is greatly affected. Another acute effect of Marijuana is the impairment of the psychomotor performance, where individuals experience divided attention during the operation and implementation of a task. The chronic effects of Marijuana include lung inflammation for marijuana smokers, impaired body defense against infections, low fetal brain development when consumed during pregnancy, heavy consumption can lead to chronic bronchitis, which later leads to cancer.
According to a report by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, smoked Marijuana is composed TCH, cannaboids and other products similar to tobacco which affect cognition, perception, and memory of an individual resulting in hallucinations, panic attacks, and depressions (Health Effects, 2019). Hallucinations from Marijuana can hinder the individual’s performance more so the drivers and operators of machines leading to injuries and fatal accidents. Depression from marijuana use can lead to suicides and mental problems. Therefore, Marijuana should not be legalized as it can lead to catastrophic injuries and accidents on the roads. Marijuana can also lead to panic attacks where individuals experience intense fear when there is no real danger, leading to injuries and mental problems.
According to research by the World Health Organization (2016, Pg. 19-21), marijuana smoke consists of several chemicals and carcinogens, affecting the lungs. Although Marijuana can be inhaled, eaten, or consumed as a liquid, once it is absorbed in the body, THC has a long half-life, thus causing severe effects to the body for a prolonged period. Pregnant women who inhale or ingest Marijuana endanger the development of their fetus’s brains resulting in poor learning and attention deficits of the children (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2020). The use of Marijuana at the adolescent stage can result in addiction and increase dependency on adults. Therefore, Marijuana should not be legalized as it affects the development of a minor’s brain, considering their mind is still developing.
Marijuana should not be legalized as it has adverse health effects on the users. According to the World Health Organization (2016, Pg. 31-32), prolonged use of Marijuana can lead to acute and chronic bronchitis, which later leads to cancer. Marijuana contains carcinogens that trigger the development of cancer cells within the body. Cancer is known to know to be a killer disease currently with no cure. Therefore, Marijuana should not be legalized for the safety of many people who can accidentally inhale the carcinogenic plant’s fumes.
However, the use of Marijuana should be enacted as there are some benefits associated with marijuana consumption. Medical marijuana use is essential to many individuals’ health in terms of relieving refractory pain, either medical or mental. For example, cannabidiol oil can control pain or seizure more effectively than what is in the markets. Therefore, Marijuana can be used as a medicinal drug to help patients recover from illnesses. The government is also in need of fresh ways to make revenues. Therefore legalizing Marijuana will ensure proper taxation and creation of marketplaces for such enterprises. Otherwise, money will divert away from our country, falling into illegal traders’ improper and dangerous hands.
