According World health Organization, child neglect is failure to provide and support child development and wellbeing. Child neglect is a social issues which is recognized as problem limiting the society from functioning at an optimum level (“Child maltreatment,” 2020). Child neglect involves deprivation of the child basic developmental, physical and emotional needs which lead to health growth of the young ones. Child neglect is more prevalent and most difficult to solve than several other forms of child abuse in the society. The complexity with hinders solving of child abuse emanate from the different types of child neglect available. They include, physical neglect, medical neglect, educational neglect and emotional neglect.
Physical neglect is where the young ones cannot fail to access basic human needs such as food, clothing and shelter which is accompanied by lack of proper supervision from the guardian. The children start to beg for food and end up becoming street children. Medical neglect involves failure to provide necessary medical and mental health treatment to the young ones. According to pediatric health care report, over 2 million children were victims of maltreatment in 2017. About 30% of the children treatment deaths were as a result of child neglect. About 34.5 percent of the children experiencing medical neglect were younger than 3 years and 75.6 percent were below 12 years of age. According to NYSED:SSS:Pupil personnel services,” 2017 education neglect occurs when a child does not receive proper education as required by the federal and state laws. Due to lack of education the child feels neglected in the society as he or she cannot apply for jobs. Lastly emotional neglect occurs when a guardian or a caregiver harms child either mentally or socially due to behaviors which are known to be immoral in the society (“Child abuse,” 2016).
The impacts of child neglect are felt by children, government and the society. In New York, Children experience stunt development, poor brain development and psychological problems such as low self-esteem due to child neglect thus leading to high risk behaviors such as substance abuse. To the government, child neglect calls for the government related bodies to intervene which increase the costs of expenditure in terms of hospital costs so as to offer medical treatment of child neglect related disorders. Also the government intervene by providing food and constructing children homes where the children can grow comfortably without exposure to child abuse activities. Other costs which the government incur due to child neglect include lower academic achievement s and lifelong mental health problems which call for the government to hire services from other nations. To the society, child neglect is associated with the emergence of high adult criminality which affects the wellbeing of the society as the criminals tend to loot and destroy properties in search of living.
In the New York city, Activisms movements have developed over the years to solve the issues of child neglect within the nation. The types of interventions involved in child neglect abuse issues include The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children which is an nonprofit organization established in 1986. APSAC engages in all aspect of activities to solve the issues of child abuse and neglect in the nation. APSAC is also committed in educating, preventing and eliminating child abuse and neglect. The other type of intervention is Chadwick Center for Children and Families which was developed in 1976 by Dr. David Chadwick. The organization offers services to the children who have been neglected as their mission is to promote health and well-being of abused and traumatized children and families in the society.
