Educational inequalities in the United States

Educational disparities in the United States has poised to a problem that has trickled down from generations in history from the seventeenth century. Access to education, which is currently the determinant of success among the Americans, has been limited to some of the people depending on several factors, majorly the existing income disparities. Families who have insufficient financial abilities to pay for their children in quality schools end up enrolling their children in charter schools that have significantly low standard education due to a lack of necessary resources. Besides, there are other causes of educational inequalities, especially race and ethnicity, resources available to the child and the school, poverty, and the region in which the children come from, thus causing several challenges to the United States and its economy.

Regional disparities in the United States have paused to be one of the major causes of unequal access to education by American children. Children from families that reside in local communities suffer since they do not get quality education like their counterparts from towns and cities. Some states within the United States are also affected, with some having a record number of good and well-equipped schools, unlike others which have educational challenges (Verhoeven, 2011).  The main reason for the educational inequalities lies in the fact that major towns and cities have schools that are well equipped with resources starting from having enough educators, educational materials, an optimum learning environment. The children from these regions would, therefore, access high-quality education since all the parameters that guide quality education have been met. On the contrary, people from impoverished local communities have limited access to education since there are a few numbers of schools to accommodate the entire populace, thus congestion on the classrooms, which affects the quality of education access (Verhoeven, 2011). Besides, the learning materials are not sufficient to aid the students in accessing better education. Limited educational personnel is another factor in these regions that have consistently affected delivery in classrooms.

Racial and ethnic disparities in the United States has also been a leading factor in promoting educational inequalities for centuries. The challenge has been systemic in the United States, with the idea of racism deeply rooted and affecting individuals from minority groups. Residential segregation of racially disadvantaged minority groups has caused some regions within the United States to be dominated by racially marginalized communities (Verhoeven, 2011). Considering the fact that education in the United States is funded by taxes from the local communities, the disadvantaged minority groups suffer insufficient funding for their schools, thus affecting the quality of education they access (Thornhill, 2015). The urban and suburban areas have been dominated by the whites where their children access better-equipped schools since the taxes generated are high, unlike the rural suburbs, which are dominated by the minority groups. As a result, there have been continued disparities in the quality of education accessed by a white child compared to a colored American in a rural setup. The inequalities, however, have evolved for years, with most of the American people passing the culture of racism and ethnicity from one generation to another. As a result, the whites will continue to stay in the urban areas where they access better education just like their children will do in the future, thus passing over the trend from one generation to another.

Additionally, poverty in the United States is also one of the significant factors that determine the quality of education that a child is going to acquire. Some Americans are economically impoverished since they have little earnings that can even barely manage their essential expenditures, yet there is more need to take children to schools. As a result, children from poverty-stricken families have to attend local charter schools that are insufficiently equipped to ensure the students access quality education; thus, the continued rates of poverty (Verhoeven, 2011). On the other hand, the children that come from the rich and affluent white families get their education in the best schools within the states and are supported by their parents to ensure that they are getting the best (Thornhill, 2015). The children also get their education in a supportive learning environment that further enhances their ability to pass their examinations and enroll in better universities and do more marketable courses while poor children are still languishing in poverty. As a result, the poor children will continue to be affected by poverty and will further pass it down from one generation to the other while children from rich children pass their riches to the next generation since they stand a better chance to get employment.

An analysis of the above causes of educational disparities in the United States goes a long way to explain the widespread stereotypes about blacks living in the United States. The blacks have been accused of doing nothing to remove themselves from their current states (Wang & Huguley, 2012). They have been victimized of not working hard to ensure that they are out of the existing conditions, yet they are not the real cause of the problems. The disparities they have been exposed to for all the time are caused by their suffering mainly because the system has been customized to work against their success in various ways. Since education is the general determinant of one economic success, the blacks who have accessed poor or no education cannot match their white counterparts since they will have to get better jobs with good payments, unlike the black child (Wang & Huguley, 2012). As a result, there will be a continued increase in education inequalities against the blacks unless the government comes in by developing policies that will be aimed at promoting formal education to minority groups like the blacks. The government should also ensure that there is equality in the education system so that minority groups can also have the opportunity to access quality education.

Besides, the system created in the United States then explains why it then becomes difficult for one to stand out, unlike their parents. In most cases, the fate of the children and their success in life is determined by the standards of their parents. It becomes more likely that a child that has been born from a humble background will remain poverty and live in the same impoverished rural areas while those that were born from the wealthy families prosper. Despite the fact that a child can come from a low-income family and manage to get to the richness, the probabilities are that very few within the society can manage to get through the same way. The government is responsible for the system above due to its policies that have not worked out to help the minority people in the United States (Wang & Huguley, 2012). The educational inequalities have caused several problems within the society, with most of the children from low-income families engaging in crimes, alcohol, and drug abuse. Besides, there is increased violence due to the fact most of the youths from the minority groups since they are jobless and desperate (Wang & Huguley, 2012). The social structure of the United States is also to blame since most of the educational inequalities are a result of issues within the social sphere in the community.

Conclusively, educational inequalities are prevalent in the United States and are being inherited from one generation to another. Several factors have led to the American to access education unequally, but major among them is ineffective government policies, continued ethnicity and racial segregation of the blacks in the United States, regional segregation, and poverty. The educational inequalities have continued to expose themselves from one generation to another with those who are rich remaining rich and perhaps getting richer while the poor remain anguish in poverty. The fact that education determines the success of an individual in the United States makes it clear that those who have received poor education will likely not access job opportunities and as well will not be able to educate their children, thus the continuous poverty cycle. As a result of the inequalities, the blacks have been accused of not making an effort in trying to come out of their poor condition, yet the system has been tailored to make them remain. It is, therefore, essential for the government to come up with better measures that will enhance equality in education.
