The anti-Asian sentiment is mainly the widespread hostilities and increased opposition to Asian culture, policies, and politics. The anti-Asian sentiment became evident, especially when the Chinese helped to construct the first intercontinental railway. As a result, there was an economic breakdown that further caused affected the global economy due to the limited movement of goods across the continents.

The changes in the United States and China’s relationship had numerous impacts, especially to the American Chinese population. Even though the United States helped China to calm down, the American Chinese students were given loans and cautioned to finish school after the inflation in their country. Those who had completed Ph.D. programs were given jobs as lecturers. However, when the relationship between the two countries went sour, the Chinese Americans were attacked physically, their business was attacked, most of The Chinese nationals within the United States were investigated and questioned to find out their loyalty. The Chinese were also restricted from freely traveling to America.

  1. Explore why Chinese Americans have performed well at school based on Chang’s book.

Chinese Americans have performed well in school since most of them had been born in the United States thus had grasped language that was being used in the American education system. They could easily read, write, and engage with their instructors, thus enhance their capabilities of performing in school, unlike the Chinese who had just come to China to study at an older age. The fact that they were also competing for opportunities made them work harder to increase their ability to grasp such opportunities.

  1. Discuss why American society made American-born Chinese feel insecure about their legal residency, citizenship rights, and social acceptance.

The American born Chinese feel insecure about their residency in the United States since they are not original people of the American land. Besides, with the history, they have been exposed to some form of stigmatization and attacks by some of the Americans that have led to even some of them losing their businesses, especially those operating in the Chinese towns set up in America. As a result, they have not been socially accepted in the United States, risking their citizenship rights primarily due to the fight for superiority.

  1. Make a comparison between family separations among contemporary Chinese Americans of “astronaut family” and “parachute children family and Chinese Americans in the past.

The astronaut family was mainly the Chinese people who found it more profitable and convenient to operate businesses in Hong Kong but were determined to maintain the ties of both countries, thus transferring their wealth and families to the United States while they did business in Hong Kong. They then had some level of separation from their families but kept flying back and forth between Hong Kong and North America; thus, the split family tradition. On the other hand, the parachute children’s family were left in the United States to study without supervision from either parent, thus family separation to save the children from the high competition in education in Taiwan. Chinese Americans, however, had all their family members in the United States except for the extended family, thus limited family separation.

The 1997 political change was caused by an agreement between the Chinese and British that enabled Hong Kong Island to be returned to China. The city acted as now the principal capital of china at that time with more resolutions to allow two systems of government to be used in China. The treaty had an impact on immigration as most of the Chinese residents flew to Hong Kong as they escaped the communist rule while most of the Chinese citizens were given travel restrictions.

  1. Explain what H-1b visa is and the problem of this policy.

The H-1b visa is an American immigrant visa that allows the American companies to get citizens from other countries with a bachelor’s qualification in expert fields to work for them. The main problem of the policy is it risks the American graduates from lack of jobs since most of them would have been taken up by foreign nationals.

  1. Describe the Wen Ho Lee case, compare the treatment of Lee and the treatment of Duetch when both violated the security codes in handling sensitive documents, and discuss the implication and significance of Lee’s case to Chinese Americans.

However, during that time, he was kept under dreadful conditions. Deutch, on the other hand, was guilty of various offenses including removing classified information without being authorized to and sharing to his personal computer punishable by one-year imprisonment and an attempt to conceal or destroy information of considerable significance to the government punishable by three years imprisonment but no legal action was taken against him despite not cooperating with the police. The implications of the case point to the fact that the Chinese Americans are at risk of being denied justice, unlike the American nationals.
