Exploration Essay

The abortion debate has been a prevalent controversy surrounding the religious, moral, and legal implications. The two sides of the debate are the pro-life that, argues the fetus and mother’s humanity, and the pro-choice that argues a woman has a right to decide whether to abort. The debate has seemingly reached a stalemate, with both sides only raising new points on why they are right and not considering the other side’s logic. The two terms, Pro-life and pro-choice, have been common features in the mainstream media, together with “anti-abortion” and ”abortion rights.”  A significant number of people approach the abortion issue from an ethical point of view. Others consider the legal and political point of view with the pro-choice society seeking to ease anti-abortion laws and pro-life seeking to enact and expand anti-abortion laws. This document discusses the abortion debate’s ongoing conversation.

Abortion is a critical and sensitive subject to a significant number of people. In many countries, abortion is illegal, with society having a strong stance against the issue. In others, abortions are allowed under some circumstances, including medical reasons. I chose to discuss the issue because I have a friend who once had to deal with the choice. For most people, the issue is only another media topic since it has not touched on their lives at a personal level. There are various reasons that a person would want to take an abortion. One is why some societies and religious institutions are against it: making wrong decisions or having irresponsible behavior. There have been many cases of why women would want to abort the baby stating that they are not ready to have the baby. Societies that are against abortion object to these types of requests because of the availability of contraceptives claiming irresponsible behavior as not being a permissible excuse for taking a life.

However, not all abortion requests root in irresponsible behavior. Some women request abortions due to issues beyond them, such as rape cases. This was the scenario that my friend had to face. Nessa, an old college friend, was raped in her three years of college studies while heading home from a restaurant. While still in shock, she decided to stay quiet about the issue as she did not want to face the embarrassment and stigmatization associated with rape. Unfortunately, her decision was ill-informed as she got pregnant from the rape. She realized she was pregnant after three weeks in which she decided to seek medical attention. She consulted with her female friends on the issue, who provided significant help to her while going through the situation. A topic that arose was what she wanted to do with the baby. Being a Christian, it was not an easy choice. The Christian religious view on the debate is that life comes from God, and only God has the right to take it. However, she could not imagine raising a baby conceived unwillingly to be a constant reminder of when a criminal took advantage of her.

Within Nessa’s circle of friends were pro-life and pro-choice people. Some advised her that she should get an abortion as it will help her heal from the trauma quicker since the only remainder will be in her brain. Others thought she should have the baby since she is a Christian and offer it up for adoption instead of killing a life. These two choices seemed to make sense for her situation, but the final decision lay with her. I could fathom how this decision was hard for her, especially because of her Christian religious background. On the one side, she did not want to have the pregnancy. On the other hand, she struggled with how society might perceive her if she aborted the baby and her relationship with God. Various media forms have discussions on the issue of abortion, especially in cases like Nessa’s where the conception was not out of choice but rather forced upon.

Abortion is a crime –Alpha Blondy.

Mainstream media has had a lot of discussions on the issue, raising points on both sides. Various artists have created songs taking a stance on the issue, such as ‘abortion is a crime’ by Alpha Blondy. Alpha Blondy takes a pro-life stance on the issue stating, as the song title suggests, that abortion is a crime. Blondy suggests that every human being has the “right to the sun”(Blondy, 00:50). He means that every human being has a right to experience life. While progress towards the abortion debate has seemed to stagnate on deciding when does life form begin and when can people say that life begins. According to Blondy, his stance is that the fetus is alive; hence abortion should be considered murder, which is illegal. In his songs, Blondy states that an abortion punishes the child for sins they did not commit. For Blondy, the fetus is a human form with rights and deserves to be protected by the law. Blondy suggests that the people giving reasons like not having enough to feed the baby or lack of resources should understand that “there is enough place under Jah Jah sun“(Blondy, 1:10). The downside of Blondy’s argument is that he takes a stance on when life form begins, which is a subject that a significant number of people cannot decide. His argument is on the perception that as soon as the mother can be confirmed as pregnant, then there is a life form in the mother. This argument could be deducted by people who state that life form begins at other stages.

NARAL Pro-Choice America- www.prochoiceamerica.org

NARAL pro-choice is a website that supports abortion. It advocates for reproductive freedom for all humans. The group actively mobilizes and organizes people to fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL boasts of 2.5 million people following who support the pro-life campaign. According to NARAL, 77 percent of the American population supports abortion (NARAL, pg 1). The lobby fights back the misinformation spread by anti-choice extremists who, according to NARAL, intend to take away the freedom that Americans should have on reproductive choices. According to NARAL, reproductive freedom should be enjoyed by everyone. They suggest that everyone has a right to decide when they want to have a family, when they should grow a family, and also whether they want to have a family.

NARAL states that anti-abortion laws and groups deny basic access to reproductive healthcare for people needing abortions(NARAL, pg 1). They term anti-abortion laws as pregnancy discrimination since they deny access to a freedom right. The argument provided by NARAL is effective as it states how denying a woman an abortion is denying her access to reproductive freedom. They mention that the law allows people the freedom to decide on their reproductive health and that the right should not be infringed. However, they mostly address their viewpoint and term the opposing side as being wrong. They do not consider the pro-life argument’s take on reproductive health(NARAL, pg 1). Whereas supporters of the Pro-life side strongly object to abortion, they raise some medical aspects that could necessitate an abortion, such as medical conditions in which the mother would be in harm’s way by keeping the pregnancy. NARAL collectively goes against the pro-life argument without considering this aspect.

Simkulet, William. “The inconsistency argument: why apparent pro-life inconsistency undermines opposition to induced abortion.” Journal of medical ethics (2021).12-22

William Simkulet raises significant points on the pro-life argument. Simkulet states that the pro-life argument is based on the belief that a human fetus is a life form after conception. Based on this viewpoint, the human fetus then requires the provision of important resources to aid its growth (William, pg 13). This includes the mother making sacrifices for the benefit of the fetus. After the mother has conceived, it is the baby’s right that the mother does everything in her power to support it. Using this perspective eliminates the argument of the mother being considered first. A significant number of women requesting abortions or considering it mentions not having adequate resources or being in the mental capacity to raise the baby. However, by considering Simkulets argument, the mother, after conceiving the baby, should come second after the baby’s needs. The mother should be willing and ready to have the baby regardless of their situation unless keeping the pregnancy would terminate or greatly impact their physical health(William, pg 14). Simkulet’s argument is effective against the pro-choice argument as it puts the baby first immediately after conception, offering the baby right’s over the mother’s rights as long as the pregnancy will not affect the physical well-being of the mother

Manninen, Bertha Alvarez. “A Pro-Choice Response to New York’s Reproductive Health Act.” Philosophies 6.1 (2021): 15.

Bertha Alvarez offers an interesting approach to the abortion debate. Alvarez mentions the Reproductive Health Act, which offers three scenarios when an abortion can be allowed. The instances include before 24 weeks of pregnancy, a non-viable fetus,  and when the pregnancy places the mother’s life at risk(Alvarez, pg 15). Bertha Alvarez mentions that the abortion debate should move beyond abortion ethics and consider the morality of non-viable fetus euthanasia (Alvarez, pg 15). Bertha Alvarez states that abortion should be considered a fetal evacuation right and not fetal termination. Through this, the death of the healthy fetus is removed from the options. Bertha Alvarez offers a new approach that can be considered, promoting settling the two sides of the debate. The safe evacuation of the healthy fetus addresses the pro-choice and pro-life sides of the debate.

To sum up, the various media forms offer great insight into the debate. The pro-life side insists on the human fetus as a life form, while the pro-choice suggests considering the mother’s needs. However, the new approach to fetal evacuation will help settle the debate as pro-life people will not have to fight for the baby’s life, and pro-choice people can also settle that the mother’s rights are considered. The research on these media forms will raise critical aspects of the debate and the best way to move forward with the issue.
