A sociological event

Assignment Topic : A sociological event
Number of Pages :5 Page/ 1375 Words
Format: MLA

Description: Analyze a major event sociologically. Be sure to include the following questions in your analysis: Why did this happen from a sociological perspective? What social context did it occur in? How many people are affected annually by the problem? Be sure to break this down by race, class, gender, etc. (e.g. is one group disproportionately impacted or represented)? Use sociological vocabulary (correctly!) and thoroughly explain your ideas. Which major sociological theory (conflict theory, functionalism, symbolic interactionism) best explain this event? Does it take multiple theories? I want to see you critically engaged in the material; that is, show me you’re thinking and that you understand the material. A very recent example is the Covid-19 pandemic. Other examples include Hurricane Katrina, the Ferguson uprising, the Harvey Weinstein rape trial, 9/11, major elections, the Las Vegas shooting or any mass shooting that occurred in the U.S., the Occupy Movement, or any other major event related to poverty, white-collar or corporate crime, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. You are to explain a major event sociologically in light of a (or multiple) social problem(s). In doing so you are to explain why the common explanations we hear in the media and by laypersons is inadequate for fully explaining the event. Paper Guidelines: Papers should be 5 full pages (with a 6th page for references, no cover page needed). You can include one image illustrating the event and one graph illustrating highly relevant data (i.e. disproportionate impact or over-representation of certain groups of people, trends over time, etc.). If you include an image and a graph then be sure to use APA or ASA to properly label them. Use 12-point, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins on all sides. Papers should contain in-text citations throughout and a reference page. Use any style guide (MLA, ASA, APA) but use it correctly and consistently (if you use APA in your paper, make sure your reference page is also formatted using APA). Use our course text as one of your main sources. Your paper should include correctly defined sociological concepts and theories throughout. Your reference page will have a total of 6 sources, our text and the five sources outlined below. Essays should have an introduction and conclusion paragraph. Body paragraphs will vary depending on how you structure the content, but you need to address all of the questions above in your body paragraphs. Locate at least Five Sources: You need to locate at least FIVE, unique and credible sources to support your claims. You should locate the following TYPES of sources: At least one general reference source (book, credible website, online encyclopedia, etc.) At least two newspaper or journalistic sources (credible national news source e.g. NY Times) At least two multi-media sources (documentary, investigative report e.g. Frontlines, etc.) You may also consider using the following if they are relevant: Academic research articles in peer-reviewed journals (e.g. Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Contexts, etc.) Company or organization-relevant sources (contextualized within a sociological analysis, of course) (e.g. Centers for Disease, Control, and Prevention, United Nations Development Programme, etc.)
